Sitefinity Slow Startups

SiteFinity site (this site) is slow on startup if a page has not been visited in 15 to 20 minutes. This is due to the high start up cost according to some articles and forums I have read. Apparently my host recycles web applications after a certain period of time.

A blog post from Gabe Summer at www.goondocks.com gives a some details of what is happening to cause this slow start up.

Once the home page loads, the rest of the site including the admin sections is working fine. One of the solutions Gabe offer was to scheduled a task that would access the site every 15 minutes to keep the site alive on the server. Another solution he offered was to sign up for a website uptime monitoring service.

My service provider Softsys hosting offers the schedule task add on for an additional $50 a year. Currently, I am not ready for an extra $50 a year for this service. My service provider did recommend me to switch to a dedicated application pool for a fee, not sure of the fee.

For now I will write my own website uptime monitoring service to try out Gabe second solution.

Overall Softsys Hosting is a good hosting company and I am happy with them. They do respond well to support tickets and research a problem. Softsys does have a the best prices and the uptime rating is good.

I am on softsyshosting as well and seem to be experiencing the same issue of slow load times on occasion. Most of the time my site loads super fast - but sometimes it slows to  a crawl. . How did you end up resolving the problem?

At first I wrote my own program that would load the website home page every 20 mins to keep it alive.  I ended up setting up a schedule task on my  home development server to the home page every 20 mins.

I turn the schedule task off about four months ago after moving my site to one of Softsys new hosting servers.  My blog site appears to load good now.  Which version of Sitefinity do you have?  If you don't have 3.7 sp3; upgrade.  The new Service Pack improve Sitefinity performance a lot.

Another item to look at that might have help your site.  When I move servers I ask for full permission settings.  Just open a work ticket with Softsys and they will set that right a way for you.

    Hopefully that helps.

I don't know what is happening with softsyshosting, cause i've tried to visit my own site from another computer ,  whch has a fast internet connection, and guess what? my site is loading like he needs to be pushed. I have to say that is not happening everytime but sometimes this issue makes me think about leaving their services.

The site is still working good here on softsyshosting.  I don't have the solution above listed above running.  I am running the lastest SP4 for 3.7 now.
